A Personal Note

It has been a very busy few months and Autumn has quickly become Winter.  There is always a great tendency to hibernate in Winter - stay warm, stay cosy, stay safe.  Now more than ever, it is not a time to hibernate.  It's a time to get out, be proactive and generate business.

This was particularly reinforced at a recent symposium I attended called Booming In The Bust.  While I didn't get to see all speakers, the ones I did see all had a similar message - the current economic climate is the time to look for and capitalise on the many opportunities that are around us.  You need to keep your eyes open, continue to learn and most importantly - take action.

David BussauDavid Bussau (pictured left on stage) was one of the speakers and is described as the most prominent social entrepreneur in the world.  He is a millionaire many time over and today runs Opportunity International, an organisation (David is loathe to call it a charity) that helps the working poor through microfinancing and enterprise development services.  They don't give 'handouts', they provide loans and programs to help people develop their own profitable businesses and as a result, build themselves a better life.

Another great speaker was Joel Comm, a hugely successful internet marketing and social media expert.  He is also a best selling author and recently launched a best selling book called "Twitter Power".  His basis for success was simple, just ask yourself three questions:  1.  What am I passionate about?  2.  What do I know?  3.  What are my skills?  If you can answer these questions, you have the basis for your own success.

Author of "The Great Depression Ahead", Harry Dent was also a fascinating speaker.  This guy predicted the current economic climate and at the time many people thought he was crazy.  His economic models are not your standard text box ones.  Instead, he believes demographic trends have the biggest impact on the economy, not governments (but don't tell them that or they might stop giving us money).

Finally, Loral Langemeier, or 'The Millionaire Maker' encouraged us to get bigger about the whole game we are playing in business (and life).  She also gave plenty of great tips on how to make more money including getting over any resistance to ask for money and invest in getting a great team behind you so you can spend more time focusing on the important aspects of your business.  This includes getting time back in your personal life as well by outsourcing tasks like cleaning, lawn mowing and car washing.  Below is a video of Loral with some more tips:

Another great lesson from this symposium was the need to continue our learning path as there always new ideas, new changes and new knowledge to help us on our path to success.

Until next time

Samantha

Champion Success Tip

Today's success tip comes from Siimon Reynolds.Siimon Reynolds

One of Australia's best known advertising experts and Executive Director of the Photon Group, which currently turns over $180 million per annum.

How have you been able to accelerate your knowledge of business and your understanding of life?

I read books and magazines constantly, and I study the best in any field that I want to become successful in. I probably have more than 800 books on personal and professional achievement and aside from personal experience, these books have been my teachers.

I also have rituals of success which I practice every day, so that I know what the intention of my learning is. I find that knowing why you need certain knowledge accelerates your acquisition of it.

The first thing I do every morning is meditate and do a prayer. I then sit in the bath, write out my goals and read about my 'future self', or what I aspire to become. I also focus on my own 'brand positioning' - the way I would like to be seen by the people in my life. And I think that gratitude is of the utmost importance, so before I go to work I think of a few things I'm grateful for.

This daily ritual makes going to work so much easier. Sometimes we don't feel like going to work and that can affect us for the ten hours that we're there. It's important to be centred so one of the greatest gifts you can develop for yourself is trying to get control of your mind. By doing my morning meditation, I'm trying to guard and cultivate my mind so that it is supporting me and not destroying me.

Creating Winning Teams

Celebrated as the most successful Australian cricket coach in history, John Buchanan says that creating a winning team is about putting simple procedures in place. “In cricket there are precise goalposts you need to pass along the way if you want to win, which business can replicate. These start with getting the fundamentals right, which include selecting the right talent, creating a culture of longevity, sharing the vision with the team and constantly improving your systems and procedures. If you get these basics right from the outset everything else falls into place.”
